Golden Horseshoes

Golden Horseshoes is a humorous and timeless tale of how the best laid plans of men and horses often take unexpected turns. It is an 1850's California gold country story told by a Sierra Nevada trail hand with four of his expressive sketches recording the remarkable story.

ORIGINAL Hardcover Golden Horseshoe Books

There are fewer than 30 Originals of the GOLDEN HORSESHOES Handmade Books remaining in stock. The book was assembled, printed, and bound in 1990 by the author. The humorous and timeless tale contains four illustrated, gold embossed sketches from the trail, as well as fantastical papers handmade in the Orient.

Each book is hand-assembled by the artist/author. It is one of 200 originals, and no two are the same.

The cover is 100% bonded leather from England.

Metal dies were made and applied for the gold foil stamping on the cover and interior artwork.

The text paper is 80 lb. Mohawk Superfine from New York. It is acid-free, alum free, rosin free, and is considered the finest letterpress text paper in the world.

Each book contains a paper with either a butterfly or leaves or both. The butterfly and leaves are real. This wonderful paper (hold it up to the light) is handcrafted in a village in Japan. The paper itself is a Kozo/Sulfite mix.

The book includes a sheet of paper holding flecks of gold and silver. It is handcrafted in the Orient utilizing four deckles and 100% Kozo fiber.

All handmade papers were selected in large sheets, and then hand cut and arranged in each book by the author. The leather and text trimming and the binding were done in California under the supervision of Topwood Publishing and the author.

The freehand drawings may appear slightly asymmetrical and somewhat rough. The artist/author is apologetic but notes the drawings were sketched “on the trail” without the benefit of modern convenience.

The story itself was inspired to a large degree by family history, actual events, and several occurrences attested to by family members yet well beyond validation by the author.

The books have varying prices depending upon paper content rarity. The books containing real leaves are $225. The books containing a real butterfly and leaves are $725.
